What:
About 1.1 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in seven don’t know they are infected. Statistics from the Maryland Department of Health show more than 30,000 adults and children in the state were living with HIV at the end of 2016.
World AIDS Day, observed annually on Dec. 1, is dedicated to raising awareness about HIV and AIDS. Johns Hopkins has been a leader in understanding, treating and preventing HIV and AIDS for 35 years —from groundbreaking research to providing quality and comprehensive care to patients living with HIV and AIDS.
To commemorate World AIDS Day this year, the Johns Hopkins Center for AIDS Research, which is affiliated with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, is hosting the World AIDS Day Symposium. Topics of discussion include the state of HIV research during the past year and newly released research.
