Wilmer Looks Back: Surgical Care Then and Now

In 1929, cataract removal was considered major surgery. Afterward, patients spent two days on their backs. Sandbags were placed in such a way as to keep head movement to a minimum, and dark glasses prevented light from entering the eyes. To distract and entertain patients, music was played through headphones.

Today, Wilmer patients undergo surgery in one of the Bendann Surgical Pavilion’s seven state-of-the-art operating rooms. Cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, so patients are able to go home the same day. In 2019, over 15,000 cataract surgeries were performed across Wilmer.
