Published in Hopkins Medicine - Fall 2022

After more than a decade as president of Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Richard G. Bennett ’82 will retire on Dec. 31, 2022.

A Baltimore native, Bennett came to Johns Hopkins for medical school and then pursued a path in geriatric medicine, rising to become the executive medical director of the Johns Hopkins Geriatrics Center and the Raymond and Anna Lublin Professor in Geriatric Medicine. As his career at Johns Hopkins evolved, Bennett took on many roles, including several with Johns Hopkins Health Plans, where he became chief medical officer.

He returned to Johns Hopkins Bayview in 2003 as the vice president of medical affairs and rose to become senior vice president, executive vice president and chief operating officer before being appointed president in 2009.

In a letter to faculty and staff, Kevin Sowers, president of the Johns Hopkins Health System and executive vice president of Johns Hopkins Medicine, noted that since the mid-1990s, Bennett “has worked with hospital and faculty leaders to transform Bayview’s physical and academic environment.”

Jennifer Nickoles, vice president of system integration and affiliations for the Johns Hopkins Health System, will serve as Johns Hopkins Bayview’s interim president.
