For Dr. Jenny Hoang, incoming interim director of the Johns Hopkins Department of Radiology, her focus is on momentum. As she prepares to take the reins of one of the world’s premiere radiological institutions, she is intent on not just holding steady but building on the department’s history of success.

Dr. Hoang’s appointment as interim director will begin on Feb. 2. She will succeed longtime radiology professor Dr. Karen Horton, who is stepping down from the role after 10 years of exceptional service.

Dr. Hoang earned her medical degree from the University of Melbourne then completed a diagnostic radiology residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital. She moved from Australia to America, where she completed fellowships in neuroradiology and cardiothoracic radiology at Duke University Medical Center. As testament to her commitment to being a “lifelong learner,” she also earned a master’s degree in health science and an Executive MBA from Duke University.

Dr. Hoang began her career at Duke University, rising to associate professor while also serving as chair of the Grand Rounds Committee and director of Head and Neck Radiology.

She came to Johns Hopkins in 2019, where she has since been promoted to full professorship. In the last six years, she has held a variety of leadership roles, including medical director of Johns Hopkins Medical Imaging, vice chair of radiology enterprise integration, interim division chief of Breast Imaging, and chair of radiology at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

An experienced physician-leader, Dr. Hoang is passionate about research, patient care, and educating the next generation of radiologists.

She is a respected expert in head and neck imaging, publishing more than 130 peer-reviewed articles. As a longtime member of the American College of Radiology, Dr. Hoang has worked to develop national standards for thyroid nodule management. She is also a highly regarded lecturer, sharing her expertise with fellow and future radiologists across the globe.

Dr. Hoang is also a committed educator, mentoring residents and postdoctoral fellows in the radiology department. She was recognized for her work with a faculty mentor award given by the Johns Hopkins Radiology resident graduating class of 2023.

Now, as she prepares to lead the department she has called home for six years, Dr. Hoang is excited for the chance to support her colleagues and continue the impressive growth that the department has enjoyed under the leadership of outgoing director Dr. Horton.

“Personally, I'm fully committed to serving and excited about all the great work we do and the opportunities,” she said. “I care about supporting faculty success, strengthening connections and collaboration across our teams, and communicating frequently and intentionally.”

Among her goals for the upcoming year, Dr. Hoang is looking forward to working closely with faculty and staff to continue improving on the high-quality patient care, training, and research that have become a hallmark of Johns Hopkins Radiology.

“We will continue to advance our clinical excellence, research impact, and educational mission while reinforcing a shared sense of purpose as a department,” Dr. Hoang explained, concluding, “We intend to keep building, growing, and improving together.”
