2025 Chair's Message

Dr. Horton
Published in Radiology Update - Winter 2025–2026

As we navigate this year, the Johns Hopkins Russell H. Morgan Department of Radiology and Radiological Science has always kept at the forefront its core tripartite mission of quality patient care, ground-breaking research, and excellence in education. This couldn’t have been possible without the dedicated work of every faculty and staff member across the many Radiology and Medical Imaging locations.

Caring for Patients Around Maryland and D.C.

Our outpatient locations around Baltimore and the National Capital Region ensure that quality imaging care is provided within their communities through unrelenting work to optimize exam protocols and expand operating capabilities. New equipment installs have included a PET/CT scanner at Bethesda and a new DEXA scanner and ultrasound equipment at the Columbia Medical Center site. Work begins at the Wilde Lake Pavilion site in Columbia to soon bring mammography, ultrasound, and DEXA services under the same roof as CT, MRI, and x-ray exams by next year.

The Johns Hopkins Hospital became the first healthcare institution in the state to offer a ground-breaking clinical service for histotripsy, a focused ultrasound therapy to break down liver tumors. Spearheaded by our interventional radiology faculty, division chair Dr. Robert Liddell and professor Dr. Christos Georgiades utilize their expertise in providing minimally invasive treatments to patients at the East Baltimore campus.

Showcasing the Fruition and Progress of Research

Despite the uncertainty of this year, the research faculty have remained committed to carrying through the work of pioneering new solutions and techniques to advance the field of radiology. Through steadfast leadership and laser focus, we are proud to share a few highlights from each of the radiology research divisions.

Whether it is the Cancer Imaging division led by Dr. Zaver Bhujwalla, Magnetic Resonance directed by Dr. Peter Barker, or the Radiological Physics division steered by Dr. George Sgouros, a vast breadth of work has been achieved and continues to be pushed forward. For more details on any of the researchers and their projects mentioned on pages 8-9, please visit hopkinsmedicine.org/radiology/research.

Prioritizing Future Generations

Thanks in part to the generosity of our alumni, we continue to offer dedicated resources for our trainees to learn from the best to stay at the forefront of radiology innovation and discovery. We are proud of our three residency programs that all uphold this mission through thoughtful and creative development.

Dr. Erin Gomez, director of the diagnostic residency program, overhauled the structure of morning conference lectures to allow for asynchronous learning and prioritize interactive case studies. Dr. Brian Holly, director of the interventional/diagnostic integrated residency program, maintains an intense comprehensive curriculum enabling trainees to gain early national recognition. The nuclear medicine residency, led by Dr. Seyed Ali Mosallaie, leverages the latest technology to expose residents to a variety of exam types and patient cases.

As always, we welcome the engagement of our alumni and donors. Please feel free to reach out if you would like to know more or if there is any way you would like to be involved in our department's ongoing journey.

Sincerely,

Karen M. Horton, M.D.
