On Sept. 1, Jonathan Walsh became director of the residency training program in the Johns Hopkins Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery. A highly engaged leader in graduate medical education, Walsh previously served as associate program director, where he developed curriculum, mentored residents and advanced educational innovation across the program. His exceptional commitment to teaching and trainee development was recognized with the 2025 Nager Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Walsh brings a resident-centered and forward-looking vision to the role, grounded in academic rigor, surgical excellence and a strong emphasis on mentorship and well-being. He is widely regarded by trainees and faculty for his accessibility, thoughtful guidance, and dedication to cultivating an environment that challenges residents while supporting their individual growth. His leadership prioritizes comprehensive operative experience, evidence-based clinical decision-making, and preparation for diverse career paths in both academic medicine and community practice.

“Our residents, faculty, and program leadership team are so phenomenal that I really feel spoiled with this role,” said Walsh. “Johns Hopkins has over 100 years of legacy, yet the culture we have now and the future we are building is where we have our sights set. We want to continue to build a residency culture of innovation, excellence and scholarship.”

The Johns Hopkins Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery Residency Training Program consistently scores highly in Doximity’s Residency Navigator. Walsh’s appointment builds on this strong foundation, with an emphasis on sustaining the program’s national prominence while continuing to evolve its educational mission to meet the needs of future trainees and the patients they will serve.

Walsh succeeds Alexander Hillel who served as program director from 2017 to 2025 and continues to support the department as vice director for education. With Walsh at the helm, the residency program remains firmly committed to innovation, excellence and scholarship, ensuring Johns Hopkins’ continued leadership in otolaryngology education for years to come.
