This month in 1958, Alan C. Woods, M.D., Wilmer’s second director, became the first American to receive the Gonin Medal from the International Congress of Ophthalmology. The medal honors ophthalmologists from around the world for their innovative work in the field. Past Wilmer recipients include former director A. Edward Maumenee, M.D. and Alfred Sommer, M.D.
