Corneoscleral Suture Innovation

Textbook illustration showing five steps of a cataract surgery procedure. The lens of the eye is sewed back with sutures linking the flap with the sclera.

In 1940, Wilmer researchers developed corneoscleral sutures for cataract surgery, which revolutionized eye surgery. The new sutures allowed for patients to move around after cataract surgery, as opposed to having to lie on their backs for weeks with sandbags on either side of their head to stay stationary.
