For decades, optometry has been an integral part of comprehensive eye care at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Medicine. Reflecting Wilmer’s longstanding commitment to education and training, a dedicated optometry residency program was established in 2023 to further strengthen the field.
In this year-long program, residents gain comprehensive clinical experience managing complex ocular conditions, engage in academic activities such as grand rounds and complete scholarly work to prepare for careers in medical and academic institutions.
Wilmer’s optometry residency program expanded from one to two residents in the 2025-26 academic year.
Kenzie Coyne, O.D.
Before Wilmer: I am originally from Columbus, Ohio. I attended The Ohio State University where I received bachelor’s degrees in biology and Spanish as a Health Sciences Scholar. I decided to stay at Ohio State and graduated summa cum laude with my Doctor of Optometry degree.
Biggest area of interest: I have a particularly strong interest in specialty contact lenses, such as rigid gas permeable lenses and cosmetic contact lenses. I personally started wearing contact lenses at a young age and am grateful for the role they played in my own life. I hope to use my training to share the transformative impact of contact lenses with others.
What I’m most excited about: I am looking forward to developing strong connections that will last the rest of my career. I am also excited to manage challenging clinical cases that will push me to become a better provider. It is a privilege to work surrounded by individuals who push you to be both a better person and clinician.
Anna Konstantinidis, O.D.
Before Wilmer: I completed my undergraduate degree at The Ohio State University, and I recently graduated with my Doctor of Optometry degree from the New England College of Optometry in Boston, where I developed a strong foundation in patient-centered care.
Biggest area of interest: I’m very interested in both anterior and posterior segment disease and in advancing my expertise with specialty contact lenses, particularly in using them to improve or restore vision for patients with complex and challenging visual needs.
What I’m most excited about: I’m thrilled to be a part of the team at Wilmer, learn from its exceptional mentors both in optometry and ophthalmology, and to make a meaningful difference in my patients’ lives. I am also extra grateful to be able to share the journey and experience this year with my co-resident!
