Research on Reproductive Health Care for Incarcerated People
Principal Investigator: Carolyn Beth Sufrin, M.D., Ph.D.,
The Advocacy and Research on Reproductive Wellness of Incarcerated People group investigates the reproductive health needs and care experiences of individuals affected by the criminal legal system. The research examines systemic barriers to reproductive health care within jails and prisons, the impact of incarceration on pregnancy outcomes and policies that shape reproductive autonomy for incarcerated individuals.
Through qualitative and quantitative methods, the team works to document gaps in care, inform policy changes and advocate for improved access to contraception, abortion services and perinatal care in correctional settings. By collaborating with health care providers, policymakers and advocacy groups, this research aims to promote reproductive justice and ensure equitable health care for this marginalized population.
