ALUMNI
1966
Thomas J. Vander Salm (HS, surgery, 1966–69), a retired cardiac surgeon, published his debut novel, Maaijke, in March of last year. The book follows a Dutch farmer’s daughter from the 1800s as she time-travels and falls in love with a physician in the 1970s.
1969
Joseph T. Coyle (HS, pediatrics, 1969–70; HS, psychiatry, 1973–76; faculty, 1980–91) is the Eben S. Draper Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience (emeritus) at Harvard Medical School. He was previously chair of Harvard’s academic Department of Psychiatry. He was honored with a commissioned portrait, painted by Jason Patterson, unveiled in February 2024 and displayed in the administration building of McLean Hospital, in Belmont, Massachusetts.
1970
Douglas Greene (HS, medicine, 1970–72) is chief medical officer of Eclipse Screening Technologies, a research facility that works to identify and deter mailborne threats. In the position, Greene guides the development of drug interdiction solutions that ensure safety for correctional staff and incarcerated individuals. He was chair of the Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drug Advisory Board for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and was the founder and chief consultant of Dagphamed.
1976
Larry A. Jones (A&S ’72) is a life coach and retired pediatrician in St. Louis, Missouri. At the invitation of the humanitarian organization MEDRIX, he presented a lecture series on ADHD, autism and suicide prevention at the National Children’s Hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam, where these topics are only recently recognized and gaining support.
1981
Todd Ovokaitys (A&S ’78) is a bioscientist, researcher and inventor in the fields of regenerative medicine and advanced therapeutic technologies at QiGenix. He was invested as an Honorary Knight Cross of the Portuguese Royal House in November 2024 at a gala at the house of the pope in Vatican City.
1988
Kindbody, a leading national fertility clinic network and global family-building benefits provider for employers, has opened a state-of-the-art fertility clinic and in vitro fertilization lab in Charlotte, North Carolina. Kristen Cain (HS, gynecology and obstetrics, 1989–90, 1991–93), a board-certified physician in obstetrics and gynecology and in reproductive endocrinology, will lead this new clinic.
2001
Michael Bibighaus (Engr ’97) (HS, emergency medicine, 2001–04) and David Goetz (A&S ‘97) teamed up to coach the Loudonville Christian Boys High School varsity soccer team, which made it to the semifinals of the New York State Class C tournament, the best finish in the school’s history. Bibighaus is president and chief medical officer at UCM Digital Health. Goetz is a gastroenterologist at Saratoga Schenectady Gastroenterology Associates.
2003
The American Diabetes Association appointed Rita Rastogi Kalyani (SPH ’09) (HS, medicine, 2003–06; fellow, endocrinology and metabolism, 2006–10; faculty, 2009–present) as its chief scientific and medical officer.
Sean Moore is the Mitchell Cohen Chair and division director of gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. He is a board-certified pediatrician and pediatric gastroenterologist.
Mount Sinai Medical Center named Eric S. Weiss (HS, surgery, 2003–11) president of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery (CVTS) and co-director of valve surgery, alongside Steve Xydas. Weiss is a nationally recognized leader in heart surgery and will bring his clinical leadership and expertise to South Florida’s premier cardiovascular program.
2005
Chetan Bettegowda (M.D./Ph.D.) (HS, surgery, 2005–06; HS, neurological surgery, 2006–12; faculty, neurosurgery, 2019–present), the Jennison and Novak Families Professor of Neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, has been named director of the Department of Neurosurgery, succeeding longtime chair Henry Brem. An internationally recognized leader in neurosurgery, Bettegowda is an expert on brain and spinal tumors, whose research has helped shape the molecular understanding of central nervous system cancers.
2013
John Zampella (HS, medicine, 2013–14; HS, dermatology, 2014–17) and fellow alumnus Carl Streed (fellow, medicine, 2013–16) helped lead the American Academy of Dermatology’s LGBTQ/SGM Symposium at the AAD Annual Meeting in Orlando. Streed delivered the keynote on advocacy for LGBTQ/SGM patients and physicians, while Zampella chaired the AAD LGBTQ/SGM Expert Resource Group.

Jeffrey M. Ostrove (Ph.D.) is the co-founder, president and director of Papillon Therapeutics, a clinical stage company working on genetic treatments for inherited rare diseases. Ostrove has previously been CEO of Stelios Therapeutics, AbVitro Inc., and Ceregene, Inc.
Sydney Yoon (A&S ’82) (HS, internal medicine, 1986–1989) is co-section chief of interventional radiology and neuroradiology at Mount Sinai South Nassau and assistant professor in the Department of Diagnostic, Molecular, and Interventional Radiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Roger Blumenthal (A&S ’81) (HS, cardiology, 1985–88; fellow, internal medicine, 1985–88; fellow, medicine, 1991–92; faculty, medicine, 2007–present), the Kenneth Jay Pollin Professor of Cardiology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, will be honored at the ASPC Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Training Academy with the Joseph Stokes III, MD Pioneer in Prevention Award.
Paul Auwaerter (Bus ’00, ’03) (HS, medicine, 1988–91; fellow, medicine, 1992–96; faculty, medicine, 2013–present), a widely recognized leading infectious disease clinician, received the inaugural Osler Award for Clinical Excellence — one of the newly established Four Doctors Awards presented by Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Amy Laster (fellow, neuroscience, 2002–08) was appointed chief scientific officer of the Foundation Fighting Blindness.
Crystal U. Aguh (HS, 2015–21; faculty, dermatology, 2021–present), associate professor of dermatology and director of the Ethnic Skin Program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, is the 2025 recipient of the Dermatology Foundation–Skin Color Society Collaborative Mid-Career Award.
