Letter from the Co-editors-in-Chief of IDeas
Expanding knowledge about infectious diseases to keep patients and communities around the world safe and healthy is what we do.

Dr. Amita Gupta & Dr. Mark Sulkowski, Co-Editors–In–Chief
Welcome to inaugural issue of IDeas, our new quarterly magazine from the Johns Hopkins Division of Infectious Diseases! We’re excited to publish a curated collection of stories, insights, and features that highlight the diverse voices and issues that are central to the field.
We live in a world where viruses, bacteria, and fungi pose challenges to most healthcare decisions. Breakthroughs in infection prevention, diagnosis, and treatment touch patients across the entire spectrum of medicine—from surgery to cancer, from diabetes to COPD, from wound care to heart disease, and beyond. Expanding knowledge about how to keep patients and communities around the world safe and healthy is what we do.
As we navigate the quagmire posed by cuts to research funding, staying informed is more crucial than ever. This first issue of IDeas includes features about some of the cuts and their impact on patient care and access to health services. And in the midst of troubling times, we’re happy to share good news that underscores our division’s commitment to improving health—from bench, to bedside, to the population.
Erin DuPont, Communications Associate for the Division of Infectious Diseases is running the show for IDeas as Managing Editor, and she and Molly Bowen, Senior Communications Manager, are contributing writers.
We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together.
