Exhibit Celebrates Wilmer Centennial

Hallway of the Welch Library with polished stone floors, display cases and portraits hanging on the walls

An exhibit at the Welch Medical Library, in conjunction with the centennial of the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Medicine, celebrates the history of the institute and of ophthalmology.

The exhibit, Eyes On Wilmer: 100 Years of Ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins, is located on the second floor of the Welch Medical Library and will be on display through Dec. 19. The exhibit was put together by Michael Seminara, curator of the historical collection at the Johns Hopkins University Institute of the History of Medicine; Terri Hatfield, reference archivist at the Chesney Medical Archives and Zee Hinz, librarian at the Institute of the History of Medicine.

Among the items on display are documents that establish the Wilmer Eye Institute, early fundraising efforts, and records of its dedication. Visitors can also see newspaper clippings from the institute’s treatments for acclaimed boxer Sugar Ray Leonard, original paintings from Wilmer’s first ophthalmic illustrator, Annette Smith Burgess and publications from all six of Wilmer’s directors.

The exhibit also showcases the history of ophthalmology, including early printed works on the subject dating back to the 16th century.

Eyes On Wilmer complements A Century of Wilmer Illustrations: The Legacy of Annette Burgess, a permanent exhibit devoted to Burgess and ophthalmic illustration at the institute, located on the fourth floor of Wilmer’s Maumenee building.

The Welch Medical Library is located at 1900 East Monument Street in Baltimore and is open to John Hopkins badge holders on weekdays from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The public can access the exhibit if accompanied by someone with a Johns Hopkins badge.
