In 2009, construction was completed on the Robert H. & Clarice Smith Building and the Maurice Bendann Surgical Pavilion. This 200,000-square-foot, six-story facility includes advanced research laboratories and state-of-the-art surgical suites.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on June 10, followed by a formal dedication in October to mark the 80th anniversary of Wilmer's original dedication. This landmark building was the first completed as part of the Johns Hopkins medical campus expansion project.
