A Foundation of Support for Nurses

Every year, donors to the Suburban Hospital Foundation provide more than $1 million to bolster crucial nursing programs and nursing excellence initiatives.

Suburban Hospital 2nd Annual 5k

The second annual Nurses 5K Fun Run/Walk, held during National Nurses Week in May 2024, raised more than $50,000 to support nursing excellence at Suburban Hospital.

Suburban Hospital is fortunate to have philanthropic support of myriad initiatives throughout the hospital, including nursing. Foundation Supported Initiatives

The following are just a few of the recent nursing initiatives that were supported by donations and funding through the Suburban Hospital Foundation:

The Future Role of Virtual Nursing

Virtual Nursing

The future of health care is rapidly evolving as new technology presents innovative solutions to address critical nursing shortages. Thanks to the generous support of our donors — especially the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation, the McCutchen Foundation, Epic Systems Corporation and Susan Aldridge — we are now able to take meaningful steps toward addressing the critical nursing shortage.

Virtual nursing has emerged as a promising approach to providing high-quality care to patients while also addressing staffing challenges, alleviating clinical burnout and maximizing overall efficiency.  Virtual nursing is one of the first technological innovations in recent times that can relieve bedside nurses by:

  • Performing activities to include admission, discharge and general patient education, secondary validation for medication and blood product administrations, and patient safety/quality monitoring and interventions
  • Providing mentorship
  • Being present during emergencies and bedside procedures to offer guidance and support

The technology – cameras, monitors and speakers – that supports virtual nursing is an important step toward advancing inpatient care to a larger vision of virtual health. This expanded platform can be used for remote safety monitoring, virtual rounding, centralized telemetry monitoring, electronic intensive care and sepsis monitoring, and telemedicine consults. By shifting non-touch care to the virtual nurse, the bedside nurses can devote their primary focus to hands-on patient care. With a well-designed program, virtual nursing is a powerful tool that can reduce the burden on the bedside nurse and improve the overall patient experience.

Nurses 5K a Success

Nearly 100 Suburban staff and families, volunteers and board members came together to kick-off National Nurses Week on May 4, 2024, with the successful 2nd Annual 5K Fun Run/Walk. More than $55,000 was raised to support the Jacky Schultz Fund for Nursing Excellence at Suburban. Thank you to everyone who participated and supported the event!
