Young artist Jose Estrella Pereyra created this portrait of pediatric urologist John Gearhart in gratitude for the close doctor-patient relationship the two have enjoyed over the past 14 years, “in a journey that was so challenging and at the same time strengthening.”

“This time it was my last surgery with him, and my last surgery in general,” writes Estrella Pereyra. “Since he started treating a child, and dispatched an adult, as an artist there was no better way to thank him than by making a portrait of him — what he emanates when entering a room or hallway, that smile and warmth. He is a unique human being in his category, always willing to help. And that is what the portrait is about, of my hero and the hero of many: Dr. Gearhart.”
