A Visionary Legacy in Genetics

May is Inherited Retinal Disease Awareness month. In 1972, Irene Maumenee established The Center for Hereditary Eye Disease at the Wilmer Eye Institute, the first ophthalmic genetic center in the United States. Today, more than 50 years later, the Genetic Eye Disease Center (GEDi) at the Wilmer is led by Jefferson Doyle, M.D., Ph.D., MHS, the Andreas C. Dracopoulos & Daniel Finkelstein, M.D. Rising Professor of Ophthalmology, and Mandeep Singh, M.D., Ph.D., the Andreas C. Dracopoulos Professor of Ophthalmology.
Established in 2020, GEDi offers the coordination of care for patients with complex systemic and/or genetic eye diseases. The center has dedicated faculty within each sub-specialty of ophthalmology who are experienced in caring for patients with complex genetic eye issues.
