Last fall, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine hosted its Stethoscope Ceremony for the medical school Class of 2027 and its Coating Ceremony for graduate students. As per tradition, the stethoscopes and white lab coats were donated by school of medicine alumni through the Johns Hopkins Medicine Alumni Association (JHMAA).

On Sept. 1, 2023, the 120 members of the Class of 2027 were welcomed to the school of medicine community during the Stethoscope Ceremony. The ceremony serves as a rite of passage and empowers students to embrace their calling with confidence and compassion. Later this spring, the class will return for the White Coat Ceremony, where they will receive their white coats.

On Nov. 1, 2023, 176 school of medicine graduate students participated in the Graduate Coating Ceremony, where they received white lab coats in honor of their achievements in graduate studies. The ceremony is an important milestone in their journeys to becoming scientists and concluded with the Oath of the Scientist, a declaration of each student’s ethical responsibility and duty to the public and their profession.

The JHMAA relies on contributions from alumni to purchase white coats, lab coats and stethoscopes for students. Two campaigns to raise funds are run — one for M.D. students, and the other for graduate students. To date, the JHMAA has raised $23,125 for medical students toward a $25,000 fundraising goal. The JHMAA is also halfway to its graduate student lab coat campaign goal of $5,000.
