U.S. News & World Report Announces Results for 2018–19 Best Children’s Hospitals

We are pleased to announce that U.S. News & World Report has ranked Johns Hopkins Children’s Center #8 in the nation on its 2018–19 Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll. The Children’s Center has earned a spot on the U.S. News Honor Roll in seven of the 10 years since the list was established, and this year’s ranking is another well-deserved achievement.

Every day the faculty, nurses and staff members of Johns Hopkins Children’s Center apply their tremendous skill and compassion to provide excellent care for our youngest patients. The rankings released today are a testament to their dedication to our patients and their families.

We also congratulate our peers at Boston Children’s Hospital, which ranked #1 in the nation this year.

Year after year, Johns Hopkins Children’s Center has ranked among the top 50 children’s hospitals in all 10 specialties surveyed by U.S. News & World Report. This year, five of our specialties were in the top 10—one in the top five—and three specialties improved their ranking.

#4: Neurology & Neurosurgery (up from #5 in 2017)

#7: Urology

#10: Nephrology (up from #11 in 2017)

#10: Orthopedics

#10: Cancer

#12: Pulmonology

#14: Diabetes & Endocrinology

#16: Neonatology

#17: Gastroenterology & GI Surgery

#33: Cardiology & Heart Surgery (up from #34 in 2017)

We also are pleased to report that Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, ranked nationally in five specialties—Cardiology & Heart Surgery, Neonatology, Nephrology, Neurology & Neurosurgery, and Orthopedics— an increase from three last year. We are proud to provide some of the highest quality care available to pediatric patients in the southeast region.

Small changes in methodology can substantially impact a hospital’s rank, and six hospitals from the 2017 Honor Roll, including ours, changed position on the list this year. You can learn about U.S. News’ methodology on the Johns Hopkins Medicine intranet, in this special edition of Hopkins Insider and on the Children’s Center website. Of course, at Johns Hopkins Medicine, we do not define success according to any single ranking system. That being said, as we move forward in an increasingly complex health care environment, we must continually challenge ourselves to improve our performance on key outcome measures for the good of our patients, which in turn will benefit our scores.

The pediatric care provided at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital is among the best in the nation. Our nurses, physicians and staff members are some of the most gifted and compassionate caregivers in pediatric medicine. Thank you again for all that you do to improve the health of our youngest patients and the communities we serve.
