Message from the Program Director, Judy Huang, M.D.

Dr. Judy Huang

Welcome to the Neurosurgery Residency Program at Johns Hopkins University. As Program Director, I speak on behalf of all our faculty in sharing our excitement and pride in helping to train the next generation of premier neurosurgeons.

One of our department’s top priorities is to produce broadly-trained neurosurgeons who will advance the field. We strive to train residents who are superbly equipped to provide outstanding clinical care to all of their future patients, and who are also well-positioned to develop into future academic neurosurgical leaders.

The commitment to resident education in our program has created a natural collaborative environment between faculty and residents. The full-time clinical faculty perform approximately 5,500 operative cases per year and provide educational opportunities on an ongoing basis. Last year, our graduating chiefs performed over 4,800 cases combined over their seven years of training.

This is only one example of the ample case volumes which provide excellent, comprehensive surgical training for our residents.

Our residency program offers unparalleled opportunities while training in a collegial and stimulating environment with exceptional colleagues and state-of the art hospital facilities, including our main East Baltimore and Bayview Medical Center campuses, our affiliated network hospitals including Suburban and All Children’s Hospitals, and our numerous research laboratories.

Our department fosters an extraordinary level of independence as our residents advance through their training. As residents develop specific subspecialty interests in neurosurgery our faculty work closely with them, connecting them to resources and helping to develop research in their specialties. Two of the seven years of residency training are dedicated to research, with no clinical call responsibilities.

Our research laboratories are fertile ground with vast capacity for additional residents to develop innovative research ideas and bring them to fruition. Our residents have noted that these two years of protected research time is one of the most notable “gems” of our program.

Our residents are remarkably accomplished. Their clinical activities and amazing research productivity enabled our recent program expansion in 2016, so we match four residents per year.

We are interested in recruiting talented residents, ambitious to learn and passionate about neurosurgery. Please click on the following link for additional application information on how to apply.
