Complex Gender Microsurgery Fellowship

The Johns Hopkins’ Complex Gender Surgery and Microsurgery Fellowship will seek to train the future leaders in complex reconstructive surgery, gender affirming surgery, and microsurgery, with an additional focus on a multi-disciplinary approach to surgical planning and management.

Clinical experience will be centered around the Johns Hopkins Center for Transgender and Gender Expansive Health (CTH), and other plastic surgery specialties, directed by Dr. Fan Liang. Fellows trained in Transgender and Microsurgery at our institution will be able to direct a multi-disciplinary approach for patients undergoing all gender affirming surgeries, with an additional focus of complex revision referrals from other centers from across the country. The surgical fellowship will provide training in all transgender procedures, including microvascular phalloplasty, metoidioplasty, vaginoplasty, masculinizing & feminizing chest surgery, and facial gender surgery (including frontal sinus setback, rhinoplasty, tracheal shave and genioplasty/jaw contouring). The fellow will have other opportunities for microsurgical experience at Hopkins and is expected to graduate with proficiency in Reconstructive Microsurgery.

Upon completion, the fellow will possess the pertinent training to pursue an academic surgical career focused on the field of their choice related to Transgender medicine and Microsurgery – combining the specialties of Plastic Surgery with knowledge and understanding of various applicable specialties. Additionally, as a plastic surgeon leads the multidisciplinary Johns Hopkins Center for Transgender and Gender Expansive Health, there will be opportunities for interested fellows to gain experience in program leadership, non-surgical fields (psychiatry and mental health) and development of new programs.

One fellow will be accepted each August, for a 12 month intensive rotation. There will be routine involvement with resident and medical student teaching and participation in research. The fellow is expected to hold an appointment as Clinical Instructor on the faculty and there will be opportunities for graduated independence as the year.
