Long-term (Hickman) Catheter

A Hickman Catheter can be used to give medications, chemotherapy and blood, and can also be used to take blood for tests, so that you don't need to be stuck with needles as often. The Hickman is a long, spaghetti-like catheter which is placed into a large vein in your chest, just above the heart. The catheter is then tunneled under the skin and comes out in your upper chest area. The catheter has a cuff that attaches under the skin to help keep it in place after the stitches are taken out.
