Many faculty have considered writing for the public. Physicians and other health professionals experience on-the-job challenges, problems, and also rewarding outcomes in health care that can lead to well-written works of great service to the public. In this writing workshop you will learn how to use your knowledge and experience to write about health and health care for public audiences. Previous faculty attendees have had stories written in this session published. This course is not about writing research papers for medical journals. You will learn principles of reporting and journalism ethics and good writing techniques. You will write several types of short articles such as narrative, essay, op-ed, and explanatory suitable for magazines, newspapers, or the Web, and blog posts. You will have detailed critiques of your writing from instructor Mary Knudson, a seasoned journalist, author and editor, who has taught medical and science writing for 14 years in the JHU MA in Writing Program, was a medical and science writer for The Sun, is the co-editor ofA Field Guide for Science Writers, and co-author with Edward K.
