Regional Trauma Center

Suburban Hospital is the only designated trauma center in Montgomery County. It is verified as a Level II Trauma Center, one of only four hospitals in Maryland given that recognition by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems. As such, we are committed to providing the best possible trauma care to all seriously injured trauma patients.

Our Trauma Center sees approximately 1500 trauma patients annually, serving primarily Montgomery County but also the surrounding Frederick and Prince George’s counties. Our trauma patients arrive via ambulance or via Maryland State Police Medevac helicopters. They mostly include victims of motor vehicle crashes, falls, industrial accidents or acts of violence. As an adult trauma center, Suburban also has the expertise needed to stabilize critically injured children prior to their transfer to a pediatric trauma center. Although we are not a burn center, we are also capable of providing emergency care to burn victims prior to their transport to a specialty burn unit.

Commitment to Disaster Preparedness

An important aspect of Suburban as a Regional Trauma Center is its commitment to disaster preparedness. In February 2007, Suburban Hospital was the only trauma center on the East Coast to be recognized by the National Foundation of Trauma Care as one of the five “best prepared” in the nation.
