Johns Hopkins University
School of Medicine/Carey Business School
Dual MD/MBA Program
Curriculum Overview
The curriculum of the MD/MBA program reflects the requirements and content of two degree programs: the Medical School Genes to Society curriculum and the Global MBA curriculum. Both are innovative new approaches to education in their respective fields.
In the dual-degree program, students will complete the first two semesters of the MBA program at the Carey Business School before starting medical school. In the summer semester, the students will complete the second phase of Discovery to Market project and will take two MBA electives. In academic years 2 and 3 of the 5-year program, the students will complete years 1 and 2 of medical school. The summer between the first and second years of medical school (AY2 and AY3) and after the second year (AY3) will be devoted to medical school related classes or activities. During academic years 4 and 5, the students will complete the academic requirements of the MD program and take MBA elective courses required to complete the MBA degree at Carey.
The typical MD/MBA candidate is expected to follow the sample schedule, outlined below.
Application Process
Students applying to the MD/MBA program will be required to meet the admissions criteria of the JHU School of Medicine and be admitted to the MD program. If the students are accepted by the SOM, their application will be forwarded to the MBA Admissions Office for review by the business school. The MD/MBA Academic Program Committee will approve the final candidates for the dual- degree program. Admitted students will receive admission to the School of Medicine and the Business School for the dual-degree program. Applicants are required to have an MCAT score, however, the GMAT is NOT required.
Degree Requirements and Completion
Students in the dual-degree program must complete all of the degree requirements at both schools before they receive their MD and MBA diplomas.
For the Carey MBA program, the students are required to complete 54 credits of the MBA program. Up to 12 credits from the MD electives can be applied to their requirements for the MBA electives, subject to review and approval of the MD/ MBA Academic Program Committee.
