The Brain Injury Psychiatry Clinic serves patients, 18 years and older, who have sustained brain injury after birth (acquired brain injury) due to causes such as tumors, blood clots, strokes, seizures, toxic exposures, infections, metabolic disorders (e.g., insulin shock, lack of oxygen to the brain), and traumatic brain injury subsequent to a fall, accident, or other physical trauma. Brain injury is often associated with cognitive, mood, and/or behavior problems. Treatment of these neuropsychiatric symptoms includes both medication and non-medication strategies. The overarching goal in the management of these symptoms is to minimize disability and maximize function and productivity.

Services Offered

• Comprehensive evaluation usually takes about three to four hours. Patients are encouraged to bring pertinent medical imaging (CD media is preferred) and a list of current medications with doses and times of day taken.
• Regular, on-going follow-up, working with a psychotherapist and a neuropsychiatrist or nurse practitioner. Visits usually last 30-60 minutes. Steps will be taken to ensure that care is coordinated with the patient’s primary care doctor when appropriate.
• Consultations. The Brain Injury Clinic also provides a consultation service. A comprehensive consultation evaluation may take 2-3 visits over a period of 1-2 months.

Head-Injury Outpatient Program of Enhanced Services (HOPES) is a program that meets for three mornings per week which provides multidisciplinary services to adult survivors of acquired brain injury who have behavioral, cognitive, or emotional difficulties. Clinic Staff

The Brain Injury Clinic is staffed by an interdisciplinary team consisting of psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and licensed mental health therapists. In addition, the team also works closely with other services within Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Insurance

We accept Medical Assistance, Medicare, as well as some private insurance. Verification of all insurance must be made prior to an appointment being scheduled. When applicable, co-payments are expected at the time of service.
