A large burden of neurological infections is faced by the developing world, where with rare exceptions, resources for managing these infections are not available. The Division has initiated research programs in India, Uganda and Columbia funded in part by the National Institutes of Health and the Gates Foundation to determine the impact of HIV infection on the neurological health of the infected populations.
Studies have been initiated to characterize the effects of various clades of HIV infection on the brain and peripheral nervous system by a comprehensive program that includes clinical, pathological and molecular studies.
Additionally, the Division also has active NIH funded programs in Puerto Rico and Hawaii to study the effect of HIV infection in women and in the elderly populations.
