What is GLUT-1 deficiency syndrome?
GLUT-1 deficiency syndrome is a treatable epileptic disorder resulting from impaired glucose transport into the brain. It is typically seen in very young children.
GLUT-1 deficiency, which often severely affects speech, can be diagnosed with a lumbar puncture that shows insufficient glucose is available for the brain.
Treatment for GLUT-1 deficiency syndrome
The ketogenic diet is widely agreed to be the best treatment for this form of epilepsy. It should be introduced early and maintained into puberty. Seizures are effectively controlled with the onset of ketosis, but might recur and require other forms of medication.
