Electroencephalography (EEG)

Using state of the art technology, our physicians are able to monitor the characteristics of an individual’s seizures and their correlation with an EEG. Monitoring, some of which takes place in the Johns Hopkins Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU), may include: 

• EEGs – The method of monitoring the electrical signals of the brain by attaching electrodes (sensors) to the scalp.
  
• Prolonged video-EEG monitoring – The use of a video camera to capture onset and characteristics of a seizure simultaneously with an EEG to identify the type of seizure (partial or generalized) and at times determine location of seizure onset.
   
• Intracranial Monitoring
   
  • Depth electrodes 
     
  • Strip and grid electrodes
