For many patients afflicted with brain cancer, brain tumors are lethal and cause loved ones untold emotional suffering. The identification of successful treatments for brain cancer remains a challenging task. Our laboratory studies the organization and cytoarchitecture of the subventricular zone as a niche of stem cells and a potential source of tumors in the human brain. Understanding the relationship between this area of the brain and the genesis of brain tumors is of paramount importance. Our goal is to understand the function of these human brain stem cells and how they may play a role in the origin of brain tumors. Consequently, we ultimately aim for the ability to manipulate the microenvironments of these cells in order to find better therapies to fight brain cancer.
