The newly constructed Sheikh Zayed Tower and Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children’s Center allow the Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery to provide technically advanced research and patient-focused care.
The Sheikh Zayed Tower houses many of the neuroscience specialty centers, including:
- The brand new 24-bed Neurosciences Critical Care Unit (NCCU) staffed by neurology, neurosurgery, and neuroanesthesiology/critical care
- State-of-the-art adult and pediatric operating rooms, complete with an intra-operative MRI machine that provides real-time images of the brain during surgery
- A specialized Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, a 6-bed inpatient unit enhanced with the latest technologies and uniquely designed for the patients’ needs.
- Adult inpatient units with 58 beds, including the Brain Recovery Unit (BRU)
The specialized care teams devoted to neurology, neurosurgery, and critical care include nursing, neuroanesthesiology, neuroradiology, neurological electrophysiology, a cerebrovascular diagnostic laboratory, a neuropsychiatric service and a center for multidisciplinary evaluation and treatment of pain. Pediatric Neurology and Pediatric Neurosurgery are headquartered in The Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children’s Center.
The Sheikh Zayed Tower and The Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children’s Center provide integration of all these activities, in an innovative setting.
An affiliated hospital, the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center (JHBMC), is an acute patient care facility with modern operating rooms and intensive care units where residents spend a portion of their residency training. The Department of Neurology is under the direction of Dr. Richard O'Brien. He and his staff hold full time faculty appointments in the Department of Neurology at Hopkins. They have an inpatient service of 8 critical care beds, 6 intermediate care beds and 15 inpatient service beds, for a total of 29 beds dedicated to neurological and neurosurgical patient care. JHBMC is located two miles east of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.
