Dr. Claire Snyder

Ph.D.
Titles

Assistant Professor of Medicine and Oncology with a Joint Appointment in Health and Policy Management, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

Certifications

My research interests are assessing health-related quality of life and the quality of medical care and, specifically, how to use health-related quality of life and other patient-reported outcomes to improve the quality of medical care. I have worked in many disease areas and have particular expertise in cancer. I work with faculty in the Department of Medicine, the Department of Health Policy & Management, and the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center to explore the best approaches for using patient-reported outcomes questionnaires to help oncologists manage their patients' quality-of-life issues and needs. The goal of this research is to explore how patient-reported outcomes data can be used to improve the quality of care. Other research interests include studies related to primary care for cancer survivors and development of a website to collect patient-reported outcomes data for use in clinical encounters.

Research Summary

Dr. Snyder researches the quality of cancer care, with a particular focus in two areas: (1) quality of life for cancer patients undergoing treatment and (2) coordination of care between cancer specialists and primary care providers for cancer survivors. For her quality of life research, she is investigating the use of patient-reported outcome questionnaires in routine oncology practice. This intervention involves having patients complete questionnaires regarding their functioning and well-being, providing the responses to their clinicians, and evaluating whether the questionnaires help their clinicians identify and address these quality-of-life issues. In related research, she is working to develop a website for collecting these questionnaires and linking them with the electronic medical record. In her cancer survivorship research, Dr. Snyder has conducted multiple studies using large databases to examine which physician specialties are involved in cancer survivors’ care, and how this relates to whether survivors receive recommended follow-up. She is also working with a multidisciplinary team here in our Cancer Center to develop survivorship care strategies for our breast cancer patients.
