The Children’s Care Center at Howard County General Hospital provides treatment for more than 20,000 children a year. Despite these large numbers, each child receives individualized care from Johns Hopkins pediatricians and a specially trained pediatric staff. The center provides emergency, inpatient and observation care for children 24-hours a day, seven days a week.
The unit features 12 private emergency treatment rooms and six private inpatient rooms. The Children’s Care Center staff cares for children aged newborn through 17 years in a unit designed to provide a dedicated, safe and secure environment in which specially trained doctors and nurses work together to help kids get well. Equipment and supplies are age and size appropriate, recognizing that children are not just “little adults.” The staff is familiar with, and caters to, the unique needs of children and families.
The innovative design and staffing of the Children’s Care Center has become a national model for best practices in the field of pediatrics. A centralized nursing center and support space allows the same staff to care for patients in each pediatric area, providing a unique continuum of care.
Every aspect of the Children’s Care Center encourages family involvement. Parents stay with their children throughout the evaluation in the emergency treatment areas. Staff continually keeps parents updated about test results, diagnoses and treatment options. If the child needs to be admitted to the hospital, the inpatient rooms are designed with families in mind. Each private room includes a television, refrigerator, pullout sleeper sofa and private bath so that parents may stay by their child’s side throughout the hospitalization.
Comfort and Satisfaction
The young patients’ comfort is of the utmost importance. From the gentle touch of a nurse consoling a scared toddler to the brightly decorated rooms and playroom stocked with toys and games, the goal of the Children’s Care Center is to provide comfort and compassion during what can be a scary time for a child.
Parents surveyed rank the care provided by the Children’s Care Center among the best in the nation compared to hospitals with similar services. The Children’s Center routinely receives scores in the top ten percent of patient satisfaction.
