Welcome to the Joint Academy!
Howard County General Hospital has a comprehensive program for total knee and hip joint replacement patients – Joint Academy. It approaches the joint replacement surgical experience in a whole new way, creating a partnership among the patient, doctor and hospital. Because an informed patient can more fully participate in his or her own care and recovery, we focus on engaging and educating our patients throughout the entire process – from admission to post-discharge.
Approximately two weeks before your surgery, you will attend a pre-admission orientation program that allows you, your family and the hospital’s staff to plan and tailor nursing, physical therapy, dietary, social work, and home care services to meet your pre and postoperative needs. You are strongly encouraged to bring a family member or friend who will serve as your “coach” throughout the recovery period, assist you with daily-living activities and provide a smooth transition from hospital to home.
You will receive a binder of information about what to expect before, during and after surgery, including a post-operative exercise plan and exercises to begin before surgery. You and your coach will also see a movie about the knee or hip procedure.
The Joint Academy focuses on getting you up, dressed and mobile as quickly as possible, because studies have consistently shown that this greatly improves outcomes for regaining full mobility.
The Joint Academy operates on a structured time line and in an interdisciplinary process that involves you, your coach and staff from dietary to physical therapy. Group physical therapy is an integral part of the process and helps build camaraderie and encouragement among patients. You will receive a Daily Class Schedule that explains your activities for the day of surgery, the three post-operative days you will spend in the hospital and your care at home.
Feedback from both staff and patients about the HCGH Joint Academy has been overwhelmingly positive. Please call the Joint Academy Coordinator at 410-720-8000 if you have further questions or click here to e-mail us.
