Referring Physicians

Throughout Johns Hopkins Medicine, we've made improving service and providing prompt communication with our patients' physicians among our top priorities. Today, all aspects of communication with referring physicians are consolidated under one roof: Referring Physician Services. This office integrates: the Hopkins Access Line (HAL), providing around-the-clock help for referrals and patient transfers; the Central Physician Directory database, enabling Hopkins to easily send to referring and personal physicians timely information about their patients; and the Physician Liaison Service, helping physicians better navigate Hopkins. It also handles any problems or concerns they might have.

Hopkins Access Line (HAL)

1-800-765-5447
(Continental United States)
410-955-9444
(Baltimore area and international calls)

The Hopkins Access Line (HAL) is a referral service provided by Johns Hopkins Medicine. HAL's toll-free number - operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week - was created in response to the growing needs of physicians to reach Hopkins physicians quickly. HAL gives practicing physicians and faculty the opportunity to assist one another in the diagnosis and care of patients.

As a physician, your call will be received by a HAL service representative. Our representatives have access to Hopkins physicians' schedules, on-call lists, and telephone and pager numbers - all the numbers needed to reach the physician promptly. If you wish to speak with a specific physician and he or she is unavailable, the representative will direct you to an available specialist or arrange for the requested physician to return your call.

The HAL service is for physicians only. If you are not a physician and wish to request an appointment yourself, please use our online appointment request form. You may also call our appointment service lines: 410-955-5464 for calls in Baltimore; 1-443-287-0528 for calls from outside the Baltimore area; and +01-410-955-8032 for calls from outside the United States.

HAL representatives are responsible for every call being completed to physicians' satisfaction. They are available to help you with any needed arrangements. If you are a physician and your patient requires transportation, HAL representatives can help make the necessary arrangements through Johns Hopkins Lifeline. Hopkins Lifeline coordinates and transports patients and families requiring sedans or cabs, paratransit vehicles, ambulance and air-medical transports from around the corner or around the world. Our staff provides assistance in obtaining the appropriate level of care and mode of transport.

Through HAL, physicians also may request information about Hopkins seminars or Continuing Medical Education programs. HAL representatives have current lecture listings and can facilitate physicians' registration.

For assistance, please call 1-800-765-5447 (Continental United States) 410-955-9444 (Baltimore area and international calls) or contact us at jhmcares@jhmi.edu.
