Birthing/Breastfeeding Classes

Prepared Childbirth Education

Our online childbirth class is ideal for those expectant parents who can't attend an on-site childbirth class due to work schedules, time constraints, or medical conditions. The eight-chapter program is an interactive, web-based class that uses videos, personal birth stories, animations, activities, and games to teach all the essential information parents need to know to prepare for their birth Our online childbirth class will help you:

  • Understand pregnancy -- what's happening to your body, discomforts, warning signs, nutrition, exercise, and more
  • Learn about labor -- preparing for birth, pre-labor signs, onset of labor, 3D animation of labor process, and more
  • See how the stages of labor unfold -- watch amazing real-life birth stories
  • Discover helpful comfort techniques -- breathing, relaxation, massage, visualization, focal points, hydrotherapy, labor and pushing positions, advice for partners, and more
  • Learn about the Hopkins unit -- information about our rooms, services, parking, and visitor policies

Class Fee: $50 -- Your eClass registration includes online access for 6 months.

Fast Track Class

When: One time session offered during the evening or on the weekend
This 2-hour class offers more individual attention and is scheduled as requested. The class offers breathing and relaxation, labor stages, comfort options, physical and psychological changes after delivery, and a tour of the new Johns Hopkins Hospital Birthing Center.

Cost: $140 per couple Prospective participants should contact their insurance carriers for information about cost reimbursement

Individual Consultations

We also offer one-on-one consultations for the childbirth program. The date is scheduled at the convenience of the educator and the couple.
Cost is $200.

Tours

Online: The time that works best for you.
Where: Online Tour available of the Birthing Center at Johns Hopkins Hospital ( Fall 2012)

Cost: Free

In-person: Tour size is limited to pregnant women in their 3rd trimester of pregnancy. Pre-registration is required ( see below for registration form).
When: Second Sunday of every month & fourth Tuesday of every month from 6-7pm  
Where: Johns Hopkins Hospital Birthing Center
              1800 Orleans Street, Zayed 8
Cost: Free

Breastfeeding Classes

When: First Saturday of the month from 9:00-10:30am, Third Sunday of the month from 2-3:30pm. This class is intended for Mom and one support person. Topics include deciding to breastfeed, getting ready to breastfeed and preparing the entire family for the breastfeeding experience.

Cost: $50.00 per couple

The Mom's Support Group meets every Tuesday morning to offer support to breastfeeding Moms. All Moms and nursing babies are welcome!

Birthing Companions/Doula Support

If you are interested in having a birthing companion or doula, please contact the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing Birth Companions Program at 410-614-6458. There is no fee for this service.


Infant Safety

The Johns Hopkins Children's Safety Center 410-614-5587 offers three services to help you with your car safety needs:

  1. Infant seat loaner program
  2. Low-cost sales program for families with limited income
  3. Car seat installations and checks for a minimal fee
