Osler Housestaff Research Program

Introduction

On behalf of the Johns Hopkins Department of Medicine and its Division of General Internal Medicine, we'd like to welcome you to a suite of web pages devoted to enhancing the research experience of the Osler Residency Training Program.

One part of this experience is critical appraisal of the published literature. The Osler Journal Club tackles critical appraisal in a monthly series of seminars. Junior residents select articles representing a wide range of study designs, discuss the articles with faculty members, and then present the article to their colleagues and participate in a critical review. There are four faculty leaders of the Journal Club, each one a general internist-clinical epidemiologist and former Chief Resident or ACS: Drs. Fred Brancati, Ebony Boulware, Jeanne Clark, and Hunter Young.

The Osler Housestaff Research Program offers several inter-locking components:

1.  It offers financial support to cover research expenses. This support derives from the Osler Fund for Scholarship.

2.  The Program offers Research Mentoring and Support, which employs a PhD epidemiologist, Dr. Jessica Yeh, with expertise in form design, data management, and statistical analysis. In coordination with Dr. Brancati, Dr. Yeh helps house officers overcome methodological obstacles.

3.  The Program creates and assembles Tools for Housestaff Research. These tools include statistical software, links to institutional resources (like the IRBs and ICTR), and guides written by Osler houseofficers.

4.  With leadership from Dr. Christian Merlo, we started a new version of the CASE-2 rotation in January 2007. The rotation sets aside more time for research mentorship and planning.

5.  For Year 1 Interns, Dr. Gregory Prokopowicz presents tutorial sessions to introduce concepts on clinical epidemiology during CASE-0.5 rotation. Click to see the syllabus and list of concepts.

We hope you find the new web pages helpful. Please let us know how to serve you better--now that the pages are up and running, we're looking forward to making continuous upgrades. And, on behalf of the faculty of the Department of Medicine, let us express our pride and enthusiasm for the spirit of inquiry among the Osler Housestaff and for its tradition of combining independent thinking with a devotion to the team and to the patient.

Sincerely,

Christian Merlo, MD, MPH, Assistant Program Director for Research and Scholarship

H.C. Jessica Yeh, PhD, Senior Epidemiologist, Osler Housestaff Program

Sanjay Desai, MD, Osler Residency Training Program Director

Fred Brancati, MD, MHS, FACP, Senior Faculty Advisor, Osler Housestaff Research Program
