Why choose a geriatrician?
Older adults are often dealing with many different health issues. When someone has 3 or more chronic medical conditions, it is often called "multi-morbidity" (multiple diseases). In this situation, it is often a good time to start seeing a geriatrician (doctors who are specially trained to care for older adults, especially when care is complicated).
Geriatricians are physicians who combine a deep understanding of the biology of aging with knowledge of the disease and conditions of old age. Along with this knowledge and expertise in navigating the health care system, they are able to develop individualized treatment plans for their patients that cure when possible, restore or maximize function often, and always work to alleviate suffering.
Geriatricians rarely work alone. In most instances, physicians partner with nurses, social workers, pharmacists, physical therapists and other professionals to achieve goals that suit individual patient preferences, such as maintaining independence.
