When choosing a fertility center, although success rates are a major consideration, it is important to keep in mind that statistics cannot tell the whole story. Nor should they be the sole basis of your decision to choose or not choose a particular fertility center. Each fertility center may have unique patient demographics, and may have strict requirements on which patients it will even accept into its program. For example, a center may turn patients away who are not of optimal age, health, or prognosis. These factors can have a major impact on success rates and are not fully reflected in the success rates.
In fact, at the Johns Hopkins Fertility Center, we believe that no couple should be denied the opportunity to pursue their dream of having a baby, so we frequently accept couples for infertility treatment who are older, have decreased ovarian reserve, or have been turned away from other fertility centers. For patients who have failed in other IVF programs, our experience has demonstrated that even with three failed IVF attempts, some patients may still have the opportunity of succeeding in subsequent IVF attempts by changing the ovarian stimulation. For that reason, at Hopkins we do not have “fixed protocols” but rather we tailor the medication according the individual patient’s past history or response.
It is important to consider your level of comfort with the fertility center and its physicians, professional care providers and staff.
Our philosophy is that the patient is number one – statistics are just numbers. Our top priority is caring for each patient individually and providing a personalized experience – from the first telephone encounter through consultations and subsequent treatment. We understand that every couple’s situation is different, and we take the time to fully assess the circumstances to determine the best treatment options. Our goal is to develop a treatment plan that is mindful of the emotional and lifestyle needs of our patients.
