Freedom to find the best doctor possible

It was a mother’s nightmare. Maura Walden’s son, Adam, 14, suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) while playing in his first lacrosse game of the season in April.

Adam’s doctor recommended that he wear the same custom brace that many players in the National Football League wear after suffering the same injury. The brace is custom made to fit Adam’s anatomy, which allows for more flexibility while playing sports. And the brace comes with a $1000-cashback guarantee if Adam re-tears his ACL. In addition, most insurance companies cover this same brace at 75 to 85 percent. With EHP, Adam’s brace is 100-percent covered, as was his pre-surgical visit, surgery and crutches.

“As a parent, I feel more comfortable letting him back on the field now that I know about this brace,” Maura said. “With EHP, I knew that I had the freedom to find the best doctor possible because the network is so good and easy to work with.”

Michael Gilchrist, Sr.

Takes care of all of my problems

With two sons that have been diagnosed with Autism, Michael Gilchrist, Sr., a driver for Broadway Services, and his wife, Sharon, have enough to worry about.

The Gilchrist’s sons, Michael Jr., 11, and Ronald, 5, have many special needs. When Michael, Sr. was looking for help, EHP was able to recommend the specialists that the boys needed. Michael, Jr. and Ronald go to speech appointments and therapy sessions, where their behavior is monitored and accessed, at Kennedy Krieger Institute twice per month. All of these appointments are covered by simply paying a co-pay.

In addition, Michael, Jr. and Ronald take three different medications. All three medicines cost no more than $50 combined, which is very gratifying for Michael, Sr. and Sharon. Even if one of the boys needs an ambulance ride, EHP has the Gilchrist’s covered. No matter what their need is, EHP seems to always have the Gilchrist’s back.

"In having children with medical issues, it makes me feel very comfortable knowing that EHP is there. If I was with any other health plan, we would probably be paying a lot more" Michael, Sr. said "EHP takes care of all my problems. I'm glad to have it."

Made me a priority

With a full time work schedule and being enrolled in an accelerated Master of Business Administration (MBA) program, there was little time for Michellene Kerr to stay fit, but there was plenty of opportunity to feel stressed.

Michellene, project analyst, global services, for Johns Hopkins Medicine International, needed balance in her life. She stumbled upon a solution to her problem one day while perusing the Employer Health Programs (EHP) website in search of information on some other benefits that the Plan offers. Michellene came across the health coaching benefit and investigated what the program entailed.

Michellene’s health coach has helped her customize an exercise regimen, and has also assisted her with setting up a nutritious diet. And as a bonus, Michellene’s health coach lends her an ear if she just wants to discuss what’s going on in her life.

Michellene’s health has improved and she completed her MBA program in two years. She is grateful to EHP for the role it played on helping her to achieve her goals.

“EHP has given me guidance and has taught me how to be accountable to myself and how to make me a priority,” Michellene said. “It’s not just about the food and exercise, but it’s about the whole person as well.”

Has improved my health

Two years ago, Philip Hewitt went in for his annual physical. When Philip got the results back, he was troubled.

Philip was diagnosed with borderline high cholesterol and borderline diabetes. With diabetes running in Philip’s family, he was ready to act. Thankfully for Philip, his wife Connie, an executive assistant at Johns Hopkins Hospital, is an EHP member. Shortly after Philip’s diagnosis, EHP coincidentally mailed information about its health coaching program to the Hewitt household. After reading the information, Philip committed himself to beginning the program.

“The results from my physical sent a light bulb in my head to get serious,” Philip said. “The program has been a good stepping stone and has improved my health. Thank God I’ve had my health coach following up to make sure I was following restrictions and motivating me.”

Today, Philip is in better health and feels more energetic. Philip has even gotten rid of body fat, turning it into muscle mass.
