
EM Didactics
Johns Hopkins Emergency Medicine residents have a broad conference experience. One hour of conference each week is dedicated to the Tintinalli Review self-study program, which covers a majority of the EM core content information. Other recurring conferences include the Grand Rounds lecture series, Journal Club, and Chairman’s Hour. The remaining conference time is devoted to resident and faculty lectures covering topics pertinent to the clinical practice of Emergency Medicine. Most of these lectures are presented in a case-based, interactive format.
Tintinalli Review
This is a structured educational experience that exposes the EM resident to the entire Tintinalli textbook over an 18-month period. Residents are given weekly reading assignments along with workbook-type (matching, multiple choice, T/F) questions that cover the key points of the readings. The Review encourages residents to become lifelong EM readers and prepares the resident for the yearly in-service exam and board exams.
Emergency Medicine Grand Rounds
Experts in many fields present state-of-the-art information about a variety of topics relevant to Emergency Medicine. Speakers are drawn from the Emergency Department faculty, other departments within Johns Hopkins, and other institutions. This lecture series draws attendance from practicing emergency physicians throughout the area.
Chairman’s Hour
This conference is devoted to the discussion of patients with interesting and/or difficult management problems that may involve deceptive presentations. Cases are presented by an intern and senior faculty member, and all physicians are invited to discuss case management. A review of key diagnostic and therapeutic issues is part of this conference and helps solidify essential knowledge.
Journal Club and Research Seminars
These conferences focus on organized methods of critical evaluation, research design, statistical analysis and medical writing. Pertinent articles are presented by residents, who lead the general discussion. Sessions typically include a short didactic presentation of research methodology by the core research faculty.
