Welcome to the Department of Emergency Medicine at Johns Hopkins. Emergency medicine plays pivotal roles in the health care system, medical education and discovery. As such, the Department of Emergency Medicine is a leading force both nationally and internationally.

As a department in the number one ranked hospital in the United States, Emergency Medicine is recognized for its excellence in patient care. It is also particularly known for its innovative programs including:

  • Hyperacute Medicine
  • Division of Special Operations
  • Critical Event Preparedness and Response (CEPAR)
    www.hopkins-CEPAR.org
  • Training Programs
  • DHS Center of Excellence Research Program (PACER)
    www.PACERcenter.org

We have one of the most innovative residency programs, uniquely tailored to the individual. Our program has just been approved to be a 4 year, PGY 1-4 program. More detailed information can be found here:

http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/emergencymedicine/residency/index.html

The Department of Emergency Medicine is the primary engine of CEPAR, the only institution-wide program dedicated to disaster management. With arguably the finest faculty in the country, our educational programs (residency, fellowship, research) have a strong history of producing leaders. In addition, the Center of Excellence Research Program is unparalleled in scope, innovation, funding, faculty achievement and important contributions to science.

It is our hope that this Web site will introduce you to information of interest to you, whether you are a patient, student, resident, potential trainee, faculty member or colleague. As always, we welcome your comments.

Gabor D. Kelen, M.D.
Professor and Chair
