Dr. Johnathan Sheele is the International Emergency Medicine Fellow. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Alma College, Alma, MI, and then went on to obtain a Masters of Health Science in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, with graduate certification in vaccine science and policy, from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Sheele obtained his Medical Degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, MI, and in 2007 completed his Emergency Medicine Residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, VA.

Dr. Sheele has worked in clinics in Haiti, India, Ecuador, and Belize and served two years as president of the Wayne State University School of Medicine World Health Student Organization. He has been involved in a number of research projects, including: cellular and molecular aspects of lipogenesis at Alma and Warner Lambert, Ann Arbor, MI; viral causes of obesity at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Madison, WI; HIV research at Ohio State University, Columbus, OH; and HIV immunology at Kenyatta Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya. At Eastern Virginia Medical School he worked on an EMS alternative transport study and a syphilis screening project.

As the current International Emergency Medicine Fellow, Dr. Sheele is interested in humanitarian assistance as well as communicable disease outbreak prevention and control, particularly as it relates to disaster response to complex humanitarian and natural emergencies. His professional interests also include HIV, MRSA and other infectious diseases.

Dr. Sheele’s interests include running, camping, fishing, and biking. He has competed in two MedWAR competitions, allowing him to combine his interests in wilderness medicine and adventure racing.
