Benjamin Caballero, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Benjamin Caballero is professor of international health and pediatrics. A renowned expert on nutrition in underserved populations, he chaired the Nutrition Advisory Committee of The Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1999 to 2009.

He was a member the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine, the National Academy of Sciences, and of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. He is currently a member of the Scientific Advisor Board of the FDA.

The editor in chief of the 10-volume Encyclopedia of Food Sciences and Nutrition, he is also the author of the Guide to Dietary Supplements, and a member of the editorial board of the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition and the Latin American Archives of Nutrition. He has authored over 100 scientific publications. His research has focused on childhood malnutrition, obesity, protein and energy requirements, and on the emerging problem of diet-related chronic diseases in developing countries.

Dr. Caballero received his medical degree from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and his Ph.D. in neuroendocrine regulation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass. He trained in pediatrics at the Buenos Aires Children’s Hospital, and completed his training in clinical nutrition at the Harvard/MIT Clinical Nutrition Training Program in Boston.

He will discuss Use and Abuse of Supplements at A Woman's Journey in Session I, 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.
