Valina Dawson, Ph.D.

Dr. Valina Dawson is the director of the Neurobiology of Disease Program and a professor of neurology, neuroscience and physiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

Her research interest is in cellular signaling resulting in neurotoxicity and neurodegeneration. In particular, she is examining models of stroke, ischemic tolerance, and Parkinson's disease.

She is the recipient of many awards, including the American Academy of Neurology Frontiers in Clinical Neuroscience Award, the International Society for Neurochemistry Young Investigator Award and the Alzheimer's Association Scholar Award.

She earned her Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Utah School of Medicine, and did her fellowship in the Department of Neurology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She also completed a fellowship at the Addiction Research Center, National Institute on Drug Abuse, in Baltimore.

She will discuss The Future of Stem Cells at A Woman's Journey 2009 in Session I, 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.
