Application Requirements
We invite you to apply to our program. A complete application consists of the following:- Completed ERAS application with personal statement that distinguishes the applicant as an individual.
- At least two letters of recommendation, with one from an Anesthesiology faculty member. Three to four letters are preferred. These should comment on the following:
- Cognitive abilities
- Judgment skills
- Interpersonal and communication skills
- Professionalism, integrity, and work ethic
- Ability to work in the operating room environment including the ability to multi-task and think on your feet
- A full, official medical school transcript sent through ERAS.
- Complete, official United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and/or Comprehensive Osteopathic Licensing Examination (COMLEX) transcript. Please note that for osteopathic applicants, we prefer USMLE scores, but will consider applications with COMLEX scores only. Scores must be sent through ERAS.
- Dean's Letter or Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE)*
USMLE Step 2 CK scores are not required to apply, but will only enhance an application. It is strongly suggested that an updated USMLE transcript reflecting Step 2 CK scores be submitted before rank list decisions are made. USMLE Step 2 CK and CS must be complete prior to matriculation. At Hopkins, we do not use USMLE score "cut-offs" or a numerical formula to screen applications. Each application with the minimum requirements stated above is carefully reviewed and particular weight is given to clinical rotation grades. It should be noted that we rarely extend interviews to students who have failed any part of the USMLE. It is also preferred that the applicant have completed an Anesthesiology rotation prior to application. Additional Application Information for International Medical Graduates
The Department considers the applications of international medical graduates who demonstrate the same high potential shown by its domestic applicants. Graduates of non-Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accredited schools must submit additional materials through ERAS. These include:
- Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) status report.
- Clinical Fellowship Applicant Information Form for Graduates of Non-LCME Accredited Schools.
