Application Requirements

We invite you to apply to our program. A complete application consists of the following:

  1. Completed ERAS application with personal statement that distinguishes the applicant as an individual.
  2. At least two letters of recommendation*, with one from an Anesthesiology faculty member. Three to four letters are preferred. These should comment on the following:
    1. Cognitive abilities
    2. Judgment skills
    3. Interpersonal and communication skills
    4. Professionalism, integrity, and work ethic
    5. Ability to work in the operating room environment including the ability to multi-task and think on your feet
  3. A full, official medical school transcript sent through ERAS.
  4. Complete, official United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and/or Comprehensive Osteopathic Licensing Examination (COMLEX) transcript. Please note that for osteopathic applicants, we prefer USMLE scores, but will consider applications with COMLEX scores only. Scores must be sent through ERAS.
  5. Dean's Letter or Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE)**

* Standardized letter of recommendation to be used this application season – only for anesthesiologists to fill out (not other letters of recommendation)

**We review applications and extend interviews before the Dean's Letter is released, but it must be received in order to be ranked. Applicants increase their chance of receiving an invitation to interview by applying early since only so many interview spots are afforded in the interest of keeping interview groups small. We strongly recommend sending your ERAS application before the Dean's Letter is released.

Additional Information
USMLE Step 2 CK scores are not required to apply, but will only enhance an application. It is strongly suggested that an updated USMLE transcript reflecting Step 2 CK scores be submitted before rank list decisions are made. USMLE Step 2 CK and CS must be complete prior to matriculation. At Hopkins, we do not use USMLE score "cut-offs" or a numerical formula to screen applications. Each application with the minimum requirements stated above is carefully reviewed and particular weight is given to clinical rotation grades. It should be noted that we rarely extend interviews to students who have failed any part of the USMLE.

It is also preferred that the applicant have completed an Anesthesiology rotation prior to application.

Additional Application Information for International Medical Graduates
The Department considers the applications of international medical graduates who demonstrate the same high potential shown by its domestic applicants. Graduates of non-Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accredited schools must submit additional materials through ERAS. These include:

  1. Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) status report.
  2. Clinical Fellowship Applicant Information Form for Graduates of Non-LCME Accredited Schools.
  3. Request for Reciprocity Review.

Each of the latter two forms should be completed according to instructions at the top of the form and submitted via ERAS as if it were a letter of recommendation. Graduates of some international medical schools may not need to submit items 2 and 3. Please contact Andy Collins for further details.

For many international medical graduates, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine will require evidence of outstanding clinical skills before granting recognition of medical degrees. Requisite evidence must come from at least 6 months of U.S. clinical experience at the PGY-1 level.

Unfortunately, we are unable to consider candidates with certain visas, please contact Andy Collins for more information.

Please note that the ECFMG process must be completed prior to matriculation at our institution. This process typically takes approximately 6 months, so we recommend that this process is near completion prior to rank list submission.
