Anesthesiology Residency Education

The Anesthesiology Residency at Johns Hopkins is designed to create an unparalleled educational experience. Drawing upon the vast resources of one of the world's best medical facilities and the mentorship of its brilliant faculty, our residents learn to care for an extremely diverse and medically challenging patient population. In this outstanding educational environment, we train expert consultants in anesthesiology who become leaders in academic and private practice nationally and around the world.

Meet Our Anesthesiology Residents

Our program begins with a month-long orientation that provides incoming residents with one-on-one intraoperative teaching by a dedicated faculty member. During this time, residents also have daily didactics, workshops, and simulation experiences. After orientation, the curriculum is organized into one month rotations in Surgical Intensive Care, General OR, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Preoperative evaluation, and Acute and Chronic Pain medicine. This curriculum also includes several months of elective time, time that residents spend pursuing their unique clinical and research interests. The curriculum is designed to be as flexible as possible, particularly in the CA3 year, allowing each resident to create a training path unique to their own independent learning needs. Such paths may include substantial concentration in a clinical subspecialty area or research. It is common for our residents to take elective months away in hospitals linked to our program or independently created electives such as international rotations or research electives.

The Johns Hopkins Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine Residency Program offers both an advanced (three-year) training program as well as a categorical (four-year) program. Each year, around twenty-five of the most talented candidates join our residency program. It is our privilege to mentor and train them to become brilliant anesthesiologists.
