Are PGY-2 (Clinical Associate 1) positions starting before July 2008 available?

We will be offering 2 PGY-2 position to start between January and July 2007.

No PGY-3 (Clinical Associate 2) or PGY-4 (Clinical Associate 3) positions are available.

One PGY-2 (Clinical Associate 1) spot may be available for January 2007.

Does the Department offer categorical (PGY-1 through PGY-4) positions?

Up to 4 of the 25 positions offered this year are categorical Anesthesiology positions consisting of PGY-1 training, from July 2007 through June 2008 and PGY-2 (Clinical Associate 1) through PGY-4 (Clinical Associate 3) training, from July 2008 through June 2011. The PGY-1 portion of the categorical program takes place at Mercy Medical Center of Baltimore and is essentially equivalent to the Preliminary Year Training Program in Internal Medicine. Separate application to the Mercy Medical Center program is not necessary for those wishing to be considered for categorical Anesthesiology positions.

The great majority of positions offered by the Department are advanced Anesthesiology positions consisting only of PGY-2 (Clinical Associate 1) through PGY-4 (Clinical Associate 3) training, from July 2008 through June 2011. Applicants for these positions must arrange their own PGY-1 training.

Can I submit an application directly to the Department?

No, all applications must be submitted via ERAS.

What are your application requirements?

Applicants who will have graduated from an LCME-accredited medical school should submit, via ERAS:

1. a certified medical school transcript

2. a Dean’s letter / Medical School Performance Evaluation

3. at least three letters of recommendation from those who know the applicant well and can comment on the following points:

  • cognitive abilities
  • judgment
  • interpersonal skills (with patients and with colleagues)
  • ethical qualities
  • work ethic

4. a transcript from the USLME Step 1 (or its predecessors) or the COMLEX Level 1 examination

5. a personal statement

Interview decisions may be made before an application is complete if at least one letter of recommendation, an exam transcript and a personal statement have been submitted.

Graduates of non-LCME-accredited schools must submit, via ERAS:

6. an ECFMG status report

and may be required to submit an application for recognition by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine of an international medical degree. Please see Additional Application Information for International Medical Graduates for details.

Is the USMLE Step 2 exam required for application?

No, but superior performance on this exam could improve the strength of an application.

Do you accept graduates of osteopathic medical schools?

Yes, graduate of an osteopathic medical school started in July 2004, four started in July 2005 and five in July 2006.

Is the COMLEX Level 1 exam an acceptable alternative to the USMLE Step 1 exam?

Yes, the Department accepts COMLEX scores in lieu of USMLE scores.

Does the Department accept international medical graduates?

Yes, All candidates are evaluated against the same high standards. International medical graduates may be required to submit additional application materials to achieve recognition of a foreign medical degree by the Associate Dean for Postdoctoral Programs of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Please see Additional Application Information for International Medical Graduates for details. The Department can place an applicant on its NRMP Rank Order List only after such recognition has been granted.

Is U.S. clinical experience necessary to apply?

The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine may recognize your medical degree only after you have begun graduate medical education in the U.S. and demonstrated outstanding medical knowledge and clinical skills. Please contact Lynda Miller (lmillera@jhmi.edu, 1-800-926-6796) for further details. If U.S. post-graduate clinical experience is necessary, you must have begun PGY-1 training by July 2006 to be eligible to participate in the 2007 Match for a PGY-2 anesthesia position starting in July 2007 or 2008.

Does the Department offer clinical observerships?

The Department does not offer clinical observerships to medical school graduates. Current medical students interested in a clinical rotation at Johns Hopkins should apply via the School of Medicine .

Does the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine sponsor H-1B visas?

The School of Medicine will not sponsor H-1B visas for graduates of international medical schools. The ECFMG sponsors J-1 visas for graduates of international medical schools pursuing residency training. The School of Medicine may sponsor H-1B visas for non-citizen graduates of U.S. medical schools.

Is full ECFMG certification required before application?

No, the NRMP and the ECFMG work together to verify eligibility of international medical graduates for the Match. It is the responsibility of applicants to ensure that all requirements for certification are fulfilled by the relevant deadlines.

Does the Department consider applicants who earned medical degrees prior to 2006?

The Department will apply additional scrutiny to applicants not currently engaged in clinical work and to those interested in retraining in a new field.

Does the Department apply a cutoff score for USMLE Step 1 exam results in considering applications?

The Department does not have a “cutoff” score for consideration of applications. Applications are reviewed in their entirety. However, the Department attracts a competitive group of applicants. Last year, 75% of interviewed candidates had Step 1 scores of 223 or better with a median score of 235. All interviewed candidates had COMLEX Level 1 scores above 600.

What is your application deadline?

We have no deadline. Applications are considered as soon as the ERAS Post Office opens in early September and through the end of interviews in late January. However, interview spots may fill, so it is advantageous for applicants to submit as early as possible. Interview invitations will be offered based on review of at least one letter of recommendation, an exam transcript and a personal statement. The application must be complete by the time of the interview.

How can I arrange an interview?

The Department will offer interview invitations to the most qualified applicants after receipt of least one letter of recommendation, an exam transcript and a personal statement. The remaining required application materials must be received before the interview date. Unfortunately, the Department can only interview about one-third of applicants.

Applications are considered as soon as the ERAS Post Office opens in early September. Interviews will be held in November, December and January. Although there is no deadline for the receipt of applications, interviews will only be granted according to availability. Prompt submission of an application and response to an interview invitation will ensure the best selection of interview dates.

How can I send supplemental application materials?

All materials must be submitted via ERAS. Applicants can ask their medical school Dean’s Office to submit supplemental materials as “Letters of Recommendation”. The ECFMG functions as the “Dean’s Office” for graduates of non-LCME-accredited schools.
