  • Assistant Professor of Radiology and Radiological Science

Background

Dr. Carroll’s earned his bachelor of science in Chemistry and his PhD in Organic Chemistry from University of Oxford, New College. Dr. Carroll’s career has been focused on a combination of organic synthesis and radiochemistry, for the development of new radiochemical methods and tracers for the imaging. He’s developed and translated five novel fluorine-18 radiotracers into clinical testing in the U.K., from idea/structural development through to final GMP synthetic sequence.

His Ph.D. was specifically based around hypoxia, and the chemistry of the two main classes of imaging agent, leading to a number of publications. Concurrently, he began to work with biorthogonal chemistry, which continued into his work throughout his time at Imperial College being at the cutting edge of research into reactions such as the Inverse electron-demand Diels-Alder reaction.

Dr. Carroll’s vast experience with organic synthesis, biorthogonal chemistry and radiochemistry will aid in his completion of the necessary radiochemistry needed to synthesize 76Br-bedaquiline in this project.
