Matthew M. Ladra, M.D., M.P.H., is the director of the pediatric radiation oncology program for the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center at Sibley Memorial Hospital, a clinical collaboration between Children’s National Medical Center, the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center and Sibley Memorial Hospital that provides the highest level of multidisciplinary care for the region’s pediatric oncology patients. Dr. Ladra also serves as an assistant professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology and Molecular Radiation Sciences at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is board certified in radiation oncology by the American Board of Radiology.
Dr. Ladra has expertise in pediatric radiation clinical care and research, in addition to proton therapy. His clinical interests include pediatric tumors, tumors of the central nervous system and spine, head and neck malignancies, and soft tissue sarcomas.
Dr. Ladra earned both his medical degree and Masters in Public Health at Tulane University. He completed a residency in radiation oncology at the University of Washington Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in pediatric proton therapy at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Ladra also completed a year-long research fellowship in conjunction with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, studying and treating pediatric leukemia in Morocco. He trained doctors and data managers to use the Pediatric Online Networked Database, developed by St. Jude, to allow low-income countries to store pediatric oncology patient data and outcomes in a secure, online environment that can be shared with other countries and institutions.
Dr. Ladra currently serves as a radiation oncology faculty consultant for Children's National Medical Center, a member of the Children's Oncology Group Renal Tumors Committee and a co-organizer for the International Society of Pediatric Oncology's Radiation Oncology Session. He previously served as the director of pediatric radiation oncology at the Provision Center for Proton Therapy—the only proton center open in Tennessee, and along with the University of Florida Proton Institute, one of only two centers treating pediatric patients in the Southeast.
Dr. Ladra is a member of the Children's Oncology Group, the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, and the American College of Radiology.
Dr. Ladra has been a guest lecturer on pediatric radiation oncology and has contributed to numerous papers, book chapters and international presentations. His research interests focus on pediatric rhabdomyosarcoma and proton therapy.
